What is Cognac?

Cognac is a type of brandy exclusively produced in the Cognac region in France.

CognacIt’s made from a twice distilled white vine in copper pots and then aged in French oak barrels for 2-6 or more years.

Cognac is only produced in this French region from specific grape types like ugni blanc, Folle Blanche, and colombard grape.

Cognac is one of the finest brandies with a particular flavor that depends on its age. The older the cognac is, the better flavor it has. So, the younger types of cognac have fresh fruits, flowers, and citrus flavors.

In comparison, the older types of cognac are smoother, with clear flavors of dried fruits and flowers, vanilla, cinnamon, toffee, chocolate, nuts, and cigars.

Cognac is enjoyed straight, on ice, in mixed drinks and cocktails. It pairs well with different types of food like seafood, cheese, chocolate, mushrooms, and meat. But cognac is also used as a cooking ingredient to enhance the flavor of many sweet and savory dishes.

Hennessy is the best-selling and one of the four biggest cognac producers that produce 85% of the cognac in the world, together with Remy Martin, Martell, and Courvoisier.

Depending on how many years the cognac is aged, there are four official categories, including V.S, V.S.O.P, X.O, and X.X.O. Other unofficial categories include Napoleon, Reserve Cognac, and Hors d’age.

  • V.S: Very special which is aged at least two years;
  • V.S.O.P: Very superior old pale aged for at least four years;
  • XO: Extra old, which is aged at least ten years;
  • XXO: Extra extra old-aged at least 14 years;
  • Napoleon: aged at least six years;
  • Reserve Cognac: aged for about 25 years;
  • Hors d’age: High-quality cognac aged 30-50 or even 100 years.

Each bottle of cognac has a label where the grade of the cognac is printed as a guide of the cognac’s age. The price of the cognac depends on how long it has aged; the longer the aging, the higher price.

The true age of White Hennessy is unknown, but it ranges between V.S and V.S.O.P category because it’s aged from 2-50 years.

You can use some mixers for White Hennessy: club soda, ginger beer, ginger ale, pineapple juice, fruit nectars like pear, guava, or passion fruit, and tonic water.

Younger types of cognacs that are aged shorter have a fresher and fruitier flavor and are best in cocktails and mixed drinks. In comparison, older cognacs have a smoother taste and are best served neat.

White Hennessy is one of my favorite cognacs, and I think it’s best to drink it straight to taste its great flavor.

How to Spot a Fake White Hennessy?

Because White Hennessy is not easy to find, many fake drinks try to imitate the genuine White Hennessy. They are distributed in many stores, and you can easily be fooled.

To avoid this unwanted situation, here are some important things you should check before buying White Hennessy.

  1. The Price of the original White Hennessy is pretty high, and if the bottle of the White Hennessy you are about to buy has a low cost, it’s probably fake. Because the production of the White Hennessy is expensive, there is no chance that the sale price will be low.
  2. The original White Hennessy has a NAFDAC registration number printed neatly and visibly behind the bottle, while the fake one doesn’t have
  3. The fake White Hennessy bottle doesn’t contain an excise stamp like the original; you should check the bottle before buying. Or if it has an excise stamp, it’s written with unclear and blurry letters or in some other language.
  4. The original White Hennessy Cognac has a light, honey, yellow color, and the fake one has a pale yellow color.
  5. Fake bottles have scars, cracks, alterations, and scuffs, and the original bottles have non of these.
  6. The original White Hennessy bottles have a relief image –a hand with a halberd on the front.
  7.  Hennessy brand uses laser engraving and a holosleeve hologram on the bottle and the cork.
  8. Every White Hennessy original bottle has shiny, transparent, scannable foil that should not be broken.
