Malibu Rum Bottle Prices And Sizes (Complete Guide)

Just hearing the “Malibu Rum” phrase makes you think of long summer night parties and good times, and you would be correct; it is closely associated with that. From the bottle to the label to the taste, everything about this spirit says good vibes.

So, Malibu rum is a coconut-flavored spirit that has little to do with the typical rum flavor. The typical rum flavor reminds of sweet toasted sugar, dark and caramelized. Since it is a spirit, it has the obligatory spirit sting and burns, but compared to vodka, tequila, or whiskey, it is tamer.

You may define Malibu rum as the exotic younger sibling of the classical rum. It is hard to imagine sailors stranded at sea for months drinking Malibu rum.

And, yes, it is hard to make sense of that imagery, as Malibu rum is genuinely a fancier version of the traditional rum.

As such, even if you aren’t the biggest fan of rum, you may find Malibu rum very pleasant and satisfying, mainly because of the expressive coconut flavor.

The coconut flavor does not only impact how the rum tastes, but it also influences the entire experience, giving it an 80s California vibe.

So, in this article, I will give you a detailed description of the Malibu rum, prices, and bottle sizes. It would be a great idea if you managed to sneak some Malibu rum at your party or have some at the bar.

Malibu rum has a unique ability to make even a winter party feel like a summer one, so it is definitely worth at least one chance.

History

To the surprise of many, the history of Malibu rum begins in London in 1978. Since it is called Malibu rum, you would naturally assume it is an American brand. However, not only is it European, but it is English.

The origin of the type of drink, i.e., coconut-flavored rum, is South African, but the Malibu rum as such is English-made.

The Malibu rum story is the sheer representation of randomness, as it involves two friends trying out a new drink. The leading entrepreneur in the spirits industry, Tom Jago, had a friend who was on a trip to South Africa.

There this friend picked up a bottle of a light coconut-flavored rum drink and brought it back home as a memento. Tom Jago and his friend shared the drink, which gave birth to the idea of spreading this delicious spirit on a larger scale.

This friend of Tom Jago’s, who introduced him to the coconut-flavored rum, was accidentally a distiller. So, regardless of whether it was planned all along or things just happened that way, both of them teamed up and created what we today love and know as Malibu Rum.

At first, they called it Coco Rico, and it had an amazingly rich and unique taste. Many would describe it as summer in a bottle, and yes, that is the most accurate description.

It was clear that this drink was something the world so desperately needed, so it dawned on the new era presenting the globe with a drink that made endless summer possible.

Since it was so exquisitely delicious and had such a strong association with summer, they decided to rename Coco Rico to Malibu Rum, which was the cherry on top.

Today, 40 and change years later, Malibu Rum is one of the world leaders in the flavored spirits category. It has found its purpose in cocktails as well.

The Piña Colada and the Daquiri cocktails do feature Malibu Rum. Its catchphrase may be the best description, “It comes from paradise and tastes like heaven,” and it is a statement that has never ceased being true.

Types and Tastes

Over the years, Malibu Rum has launched several varieties, thus appealing to different audiences. It isn’t only for rum aficionados but for everyone who likes sweet and creamy drinks, highly flavorful, delightfully aromatic, and incredibly delicious.

Malibu Original, to this day, remains the best-selling coconut-flavored rum in the world. It is very smooth and explicitly sweet and is the perfect ingredient for tropical cocktails.

The Malibu Original ages in oak barrels for two years, during which it develops its complex and sweet taste notes.

Crafted with Caribbean sugarcane and pure water, it is a recipe over a hundred years old, perfected and tailored to match the Malibu Rum concept.

It takes you over almost instantly, and even the first sip is so powerful that it takes you to a new and unexplored world of exotic pleasure.

The Malibu Watermelon variety genuinely resembles a watermelon. This variety is a slam dunk move of the Malibu Rum brand, as watermelon is one of the fruits that instantly gives you a summer sensation.

With the Malibu Watermelon, they have managed to create a drink that tastes like watermelon and feels like silk.

For all the fun-loves who are not that crazy about coconut, the Malibu Watermelon variety offers a unique flavor of fresh and sweet watermelon intertwined with the sweetness and passion of the Caribbean rum.

Next comes the Malibu Strawberry flavor. Although there are many strawberry-flavored drinks, many of them don’t taste like strawberries but just remind you of the little fruity treasures.

However, the Malibu Strawberry variety really tastes like strawberries. It takes you into another dimension combining the exotic and the natural.

It is mellow, sweet, and gentle all the way through, and the strawberry flavors are expressed yet not so overwhelming so as to feel like it’s too much.

The passionfruit Malibu Rum Variety is just as amazing as the rest of them, but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It is very particular, with expressive passionfruit notes.

True to the real fruit and delivering the closest possible flavor, this variety is for the passionfruit lovers only.

It starts with a bold passionfruit aroma alluring you with a rich passionfruit taste on the palate, and ends with a sweet, lingering, and clear passion fruit flavor.

The Malibu Lime variety is where the coconut and lime flavors meet to tango. This isn’t as expressive variety as the others, and the lime is more of an understated companion to the rest of the flavors than a leading component.

The Lime variety is somewhere between a lemonade with coconut water and the Malibu Rum Original flavor. It is, nevertheless, extremely refreshing, delicious, and recognizably creamy.

There are also Malibu canned cocktails such as the Malibu Pear, Malibu Pineapple, Malibu Pina Colada, and Malibu Cola. Each of these cocktails is exquisitely flavored, tasting like the flavor described on the can. These canned cocktails are not recommended for mixing, as their original flavors would perish.

Moreover, they do not produce such excellent quality cocktails as the bottled varieties, i.e., the Original, Strawberry, Lime, Passionfruit, and Watermelon, as they are sold and intended as ready-made cocktails. They are mellower than the rest of the Malibu Rum varieties and an excellent quick refreshment.

Bottle Sizes and Prices

Price-wise, Malibu Rum is best described as an affordable piece of heaven. The prices definitely don’t match the quality this spirit offers, as it is of a more excellent value.

However, the brand’s ideology is to spread this drink around the world and introduce the people to this heavenly delicacy.

Malibu Rum is intended to be accessible to pretty much everyone who wants to try it, and believe me; no one has tried Malibu Rum only once.

Malibu Rum comes mostly in 750 ml. bottles. However, there are other packaging and sizes. For example, you can buy Malibu cans in 200 ml. cans, and there are 2 L pouches of Malibu Hawaiian Rum. The Malibu Daiquiris come in 1L boxes.

There are Malibu can packs that come in 355 ml. cans, as well as mini 50 ml bottles. Therefore, you can select the size you want without worrying you will have lots of leftovers or not have enough.

In addition, the size variety is one of the Malibu Rum features, making the brand so desirable and popular with people.

How Much Does A Bottle Of Malibu Rum Cost?

The Malibu bottle prices move from $16 to $18. It is a very affordable and high-quality spirit. The Malibu Rum is priced this way as the brand aims to familiarize people with the flavor and deliciousness of this spirit.

Therefore the prices are affordable so that anyone who is interested in having this delicacy can afford to do so.

The creamy and gentle texture of Malibu Rum is definitely worth at least a few more bucks, so the price isn’t a representation of the quality of the spirit.

What Is The Biggest Size Of Malibu Rum?

The biggest size of Malibu Rum is the 1.75 L bottle. There is also a 2 L pack, but that is a subtype and not a part of the regular selection.

Does Malibu Rum Come In Small Bottles?

Yes, Malibu Rum comes in small bottles. In fact, it comes in irresistibly cute 50ml bottles filled with this delicious spirit. These bottles are perfect for first-timers who don’t want to buy an entire bottle only to find out that they don’t like the flavor.

What Is The Smallest Size Of Malibu?

The smallest bottle of Malibu rum is the 20 cl. bottle, i.e., Malibu mini. This is an excellent bottle size if you are just dipping your toes in the Malibu rum department and still don’t know if you will like it or not.

It is available in stores that carry the Malibu rum brand, as well as online. It is particularly popular in hotel minibars, and it is commonly referred to as “pocket edition,” which is a common name for all mini alcohol bottles.

What Is the Biggest Size of Malibu Rum?

The biggest Malibu rum bottle is 1.75 L. It is available for most Malibu rum types. This is primarily a bar-size or a party-size bottle, as individuals rarely buy it to have it at home.

Since Malibu rum also has other flavors, buying the biggest bottle may not be the best idea, as it is wiser to buy smaller sizes of various flavors to have a wider selection of Malibu rums.

How Many Ounces Are In A Bottle Of Malibu Rum?

A standard 750 ml. bottle of Malibu rum usually contains 25 ounces.

How Much Is a Liter of Malibu Rum?

A bottle of one liter of Malibu rum costs about $18. However, this mostly depends on the type of Malibu rum you are having.

Is Malibu a Strong Rum?

Malibu is the younger and more charming sibling of traditional rum. It has been made for summer parties, and that is just where it takes you when you drink it. Malibu isn’t just a beverage but an entire experience.

However, Malibu rum isn’t as mild as you would think, considering that it is so delightfully sweet and gentle. It has 21% of alcohol content, which isn’t that much, especially since there are drinks with more than double that amount of alcohol.

On the other hand, there are drinks with less than 10% of alcohol, so compared to those drinks, it is strong. Objectively, the 21% of alcohol in Malibu rum is just enough to make this drink ideal for parties, as it isn’t that high to get you drunk right away, but it isn’t that low, so you have to drink a lot just for a tiny little kick.

What Mixes Well With Malibu Rum?

Since all Malibu rum varieties have expressive tastes, they are hard to imagine mixed with anything, as they are also very flavorful as they are.

However, Malibu rum is a surprising drink that mixes well with a number of ingredients.

Pineapple juice and Malibu rum are a very delicious combinations very similar to Pina Colada. It is sweet, soft, gentle, and cheerful.

Tropical flavored vodkas and Malibu rum create incredibly potent drinks with a fantastic kick. A word to the wise, though, don’t forget that this is a vodka and rum combo, so it is a pretty strong drink.

Lime, grapefruit, or orange juice, and Malibu rum is a refreshing and tasty combination suited for many situations and purposes. The citrus fruits give an amazing refreshing dimension to the entire story, making this combination one of the best and favorite to many.

Lemon-lime soda and grenadine, and Malibu rum create an excellent mixture of coconut and citrus with a tad of sweetness.

Cranberry juice and Malibu rum make a delicious drink that will enchant you with its sweet sourness and a slight tang.

Cola and Malibu rum is a very particular variation of the Cuba Libre cocktail, coconut flavored and much creamier than the original version.

Ginger ale or ginger beer and rum is not a new creation; it is refreshing, delicious, and absolutely amazing. Malibu rum and ginger beer create a creamy and rich flavor, getting the best of both worlds.

Does Malibu Run Need to Be Refrigerated after Opening?

Rum is a spirit, and spirits don’t go bad. Therefore you don’t have to refrigerate Malibu rum to keep it safe. You can refrigerate it if you like it cod better, but for safety reasons, you absolutely don’t have to.

However, make sure you don’t keep it exposed to direct sunlight or in an overly warm room, as it will trigger a chemical reaction deteriorating the rum’s quality. Nevertheless, this chemical process progresses very slowly, so you will be safe.

Of course, the best way to keep your Malibu rum safe is to not keep it for too long, as it does taste best when not stored for long.
